Away wins headline AAG qualifiers 23 FEBRUARY 2015 11:19
Victories by visiting teams was the dominant feature during the first leg matches of the First Round of the All Africa Games (Men) Congo 2015 qualifiers played at the weekend.

Burundi, Nigeria and Sudan put their noses in front with stunning wins that put them in pole position to qualify for the next round ahead of the return matches in a fortnight.

‘Les Hirondelles’ of Burundi masterminded probably the biggest upsets on the weekend with a shocking 1-0 win over the Leopards of DR Congo. Striker Abbas Nshimirimana scored the only goal of the encounter held at the Tata Raphael Stadium in Kinshasa.

The unlucky hosts even had the luxury of wasting a penalty in the closing stages after substitute Glody Ngonda was denied by Burundian goalie Innocent Mbonihankuye from the short distance.

The result is a bitter pill for the Congolese, who are still celebrating their third-place triumph at the just ended 2015 Orange Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea.

Burundi coach Cedric Kaze insists the tie is far from over despite the first leg advantage.

“We were suffering from lack of physical fitness, but we were collective than the Congolese. The Congolese distinguished themselves individually. There is still a second leg to play and nothing is won yet,” he was quoted by Leopardsfoot.com.

On his part, DR Congo coach Medard Lusadisu said: “we lacked concentration and mind needed for such a high-level game. We only had two days of full training and three days together. This group is full of talents we can rely on in the future. The first leg is over and we have to think of the second leg. There is still hope”.

At the Augustin Monedan Stadium in Libreville, Nigeria were too much for hosts Gabon, beating them 4-1. The Nigerians led by two goals at half time thanks to strikes from Junior Oluwafemi on two minutes and Peter Oghenekaro two minutes before half time.

Oluwafemi completed his brace two minutes from the break before Axel Ndong reduced the deficit for the hosts on 53 minutes. Samuel Onyekachi put the icing on the cake with the fourth goal in stoppage time.

Uganda snatched a vital 0-0 draw against Mozambique in Maputo to put them in a good stead for the return leg.

Elsewhere in the eastern Ethiopian city of Dire Diwa, visiting Sudan inflicted a 2-1 win over their hosts. Mahir Faid and Ibrahim Gaafar gave the Sudanese a 2-0 lead at half time before Dukele Hotessa grabbed a consolation in stoppage time. The Sudanese ended the game with 10-men after Omer Mohamed was sent-off two minutes from time.
