The Confederation of African Football (CAF) revealed Tuesday the names of the finalists for the 2009 African Footballer of the Year award with Côte d'Ivoire striker Didier Drogba, Ghana midfielder Michael Essien and Cameroon forward Samuel Eto’o in line to lift the honour.
Malian Seydou Keita and Ivorian Yaya Toure were on the initial five-man shortlist but failed to make the final round as announced by ex-Ghana international Anthony Baffoe in Accra. He also revealed the finalists for the other continental awards, most notably the player of the year award as well as best national team, club and coach along with the top young player and best player based in Africa. The winners will be announced at an Awards Gala set for 11 March also in Ghana.
Last year’s African Player of the Year gong was given to Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor, with Egypt’s Mohamed Aboutrika and Essien rounding out the top three. Essien also reached the final stage in 2005, 2006 and 2007, but he’s never won the award. Drogba won it in 2006, while Eto’o took home the title three years running between 2003 and 2005 and would become the first player to win it four times if he triumphs.
The three national teams nominated, Algeria, Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana, all qualified for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ in South Africa last year, while the club nominees are made up of the Champions League champion (T.P. Mazembe) and runner-up (Heartland FC) as well as the Confederation Cup winner (Stade Malien).
Ghana’s FIFA U-20 World Cup-winning side has two nominees with coach Sellas Tetteh and the tournament’s top scorer and top player Dominic Adiyiah both named finalists.
