BXL,
Moi, penchant anti- Mazembe ….

Zamalek (EGY) 1-1 Saint George (ETH)
Orlando Pirates (AFS) 3-1 TP Mazembe (RDC)
Enugu Rangers (NGA) 0-0 Recreativo Libolo (AGO)
FUS Rabat (MAR) 1-1 Séwé Sport (CIV)
Coton Sport (CAM) 3-0 Stade Malien (MLI)

The achievement of Orlando Pirates in reaching the CAF Champions League group stages should not be underestimated.

This is first and foremost because they were coming up against a very good team in TP Mazembe from DR Congo, a side packed with highly-paid stars from around the continent.

Secondly, the expected intimidation the team received from the locals and the host club reached a level that few of these Buccaneers players have ever experienced before.

Pirates lost the fixture 1-0 in Lubumbashi on Sunday, but advanced to the next round 3-2 on aggregate after an excellent home win just over a fortnight ago.

I cannot tell you if the red card captain Lucky Lekgwathi received in the first half was justified, or whether either of the TWO penalties that Mazembe were handed in the game from Seychelles referee Bernard Camille were fair.

That is because the TV company that the SABC had done a deal with to broadcast the game, one that is controlled by Mazembe owner Moïse Katumbi, cut the feed just before kick-off.

All I can go on are reports from colleagues in the stadium and the stories of the Pirates players themselves, and it paints a dismal picture of intimidation, violence and blatant cheating.

Not that we expected it to be any different, Mazembe’s recent success in lifting the Champions League trophy in 2009 and 2010 has in part been built around their fine play on the field, but also the toxic environment they create off it.

Pirates should have been aware of the challenge ahead after an unnamed Mazembe official struck the referee in the tunnel at the Orlando Stadium after the first leg.

This cowboy attitude and blatant disregard for the law has unfortunately become the ‘Mazembe way’ in African club competition.

They were disqualified from the 2011 Champions League for fielding an ineligible player, clearly believing the competition rules do not apply to them.

At least one journalist was beaten up in Lubumbashi on Sunday, while members of the SABC crew were arrested for allegedly trespassing and other media barred from the stadium.

Pirates coach Roger de Sa, a tough-as-nail individual if ever there was one, described the atmosphere around the game as “scary” and the refereeing as atrocious.

“Every decision was against us, every touch was a foul and there were free-kicks all over the place,” De Sa told reporters on the team’s return late last night.

Apart from the expense, it shows why South African clubs have been reluctant to compete in African club competition down the years. When there is not a level playing field, you are on a hiding to nothing.

And is there any honour in winning competition that is so tainted by corruption? Is there any glory there? For those sides that do triumph under those circumstances, and have played the game in the right spirit, there must be an enormous sense of achievement. But the journey to get there is hard, physically and mentally, and the benefits questionable.

The weekend’s shenanigans are nothing new of course, and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) are well aware of what goes on in their competitions.

But until there is a real desire to make a change and weed out the corrupt elements, nothing will change. And when the legitimacy of the leaders at the very top of the organisation must be called into question, you wonder where that desire will come from.

And so Pirates must be lauded as true heroes in defeat on Sunday. They lost the battle, but won the war and new challenges await in the group stages.

They have potential trips to the likes of Tunisia, Egypt, Congo and Cote d’Ivoire to come with their destinations only known after the May 15 group stages draw.

All of Africa can be glad that Mazembe’s participation in this year’s Champions League is over because they tarnish the image of the game on the continent.

They are by no means the only guilty party, but it is good riddance all the same.

Pirates went through 3-2 on aggregate after beating the four-time African Champions League kings from the Democratic Republic of Congo 3-1 in Soweto two weeks ago.

The last time Pirates reached the group stages of this tournament was in 2006 when they went down 1-0 to CS Sfaxien in the semifinal.

Captain Lucky Lekgwathi is the only surviving member of that team.

Mazembe started the game like a house on fire but found Pirates' back four in an uncompromising mood, clearing everything thrown at them.

Goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa punched, fisted and saved all the shots coming his way from Mazembe, who were inspired by their throng of supporters.

Pirates suffered a major blow when Lekgwathi was shown a red card in a 50/50 situation. But the visitors refused to throw in the towel.

"It is unfortunate people back home in South Africa could not watch the match, it was bad in terms of everything," said Lekgwathi.

"Some of these things are killing African soccer. We came here expecting such things, including poor refereeing.

"We were mentally and psychologically strong. I hope CAF will act against some of these people who are bringing shame to our sport."

After Lekgwathi was sent off, coach Roger de Sa and assistants Tebogo Moloi and Eric Tinkler sacrificed striker Rudolf Bester.

They introduced Bheki Nzunga to keep the defence in good shape. Later, Pirates brought in the creative Oupa Manyisa for Tlou Segolela.

As if Lekwathi's sending off was not bad enough, Mazembe were awarded controversial penalties but Meyiwa saved from the spot.

Speaking from Congo, Pirates head of administration Senzo Mazingisa was furious with the treatment meted out to them.

"The treatment was bad. Our technical staff were harassed, our dressing room was left wide open. You can write a book about some of these things.

"We had our captain Lucky sent out for no apparent reason. Senzo also saved two penalties. Prior to the start of the game, people here were able to speak English.

"When the game started, they started communicating with us in French, clearly to frustrate us. We hope for the best getting out of this country.

"We are grateful to the South African embassy here, they have been very supportive."

Sowetan has learnt that the match was not shown live on SABC after some of their crew members were kicked out of the stadium.

Some of them were allegedly arrested by police and soldiers.

"We were informed our crew was kicked out of the stadium. Pirates chairman Dr Irvin Khoza intervened, and we were allowed to go back in," said SABC group spokesman Kaizer Kganyago. "Later they stopped the feed despite the fact that we agreed with them (the local broadcaster) some weeks ago to televise the game. We really wanted to show the match live on television."
