Patrick’s trial run
Trial run: Patrick Dimbala during PNEs open training session yesterday see Page 79

Darren Ferguson is aiming to run the rule over trialist Patrick Dimbala in Preston’s friendly at Oldham tomorrow.
The 27-year-old DR Congo striker has been training with North End this week and took part in yesterday’s open session at Deepdale.
Ferguson had intended to play Dimbala against Wrexham on Wednesday night but international clearance didn’t come through.
So he’s hoping the paperwork will arrive in time for the visit to Boundary Park.
Dimbala isn’t North End’s main target to strengthen the forward line by any stretch of the imagination. At the moment they’re just taking the opportunity to have a look at him on a trial basis.
Ferguson said: “Patrick has been brought to our attention by an agent – he’s been playing in Greece.
“So far he’s looked quick and strong and trained very well.
“The lad speaks decent English so we’ll see how it goes.
“Hopefully the international clearance will come through in time for the Oldham game.
“Even for friendly matches, the protocol is that you get clearance.”
Dimbala played last season for Greek Super League side PAS Giannina.
The majority of his career has been spent in Belgium.
Ferguson is also looking to wrap up the Bosman signing of Darel Russell before tomorrow’s game.
Negotiations have been ongoing with the former Norwich midfielder’s agent over personal terms.
The PNE boss said: “I’m hopeful that something will happen before the weekend.
“Darel wants to come, I’ve spoken to him at length, he knows how I want us to play and how he would fit in.”
After fielding a near full-strength side at Wrexham, Ferguson seems likely to mix-and-match against Oldham.
Jon Parkin misses out again after suffering a setback in his recovery from a hamstring strain.
His involvement in the pre-season matches has been limited to 45 minutes against Bamber Bridge.
Said Ferguson: “Jon tweaked his hamstring and when he came back to train with us he tweaked it again.
“It’s not torn but it’s something he has to be careful with.
“At the moment it’s looking like he won’t be fit for the opening game, although if he gets a week’s training done he might make the bench.”
