Nigerian players not good enough for BBC awards

For the umpteenth time, no Nigerian footballer was among the five nominees for the 2009 BBC African Footballer of the year award.



According to the list released on BBC’s African football programme, Fast Track, Ivorian and Chelsea star, Didier Drogba, topped the nominees that included, Ghana international, Michael Essien, Cameroonian skipper, Samuel Eto’o, Tresor Mputu Mbai of Zaire and Ivory Coast’s Yaya Toure.

The last Nigerian who was nominated and eventually won the award was Austin Jay Jay Okocha back in 2003 and 2004.

The latest nominations go a long way in establishing the fact that no Nigerian player is among the best in the continent. In fact, many are not highly rated.

Some of the names like Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto’o and Michael Essien have been regular nominations as they have consistently performed well over the years.

Drogba and Essien ply their trade in England with Chelsea and have been instrumental to Coach Carlo Ancelloti’s success story at the club. Interestingly, Nigeria’s John Mikel Obi plays along with them.

Tressor Mputu Mbai plays with CAF Champions League winners, TP Mazembe, and was in the heart of the squad that defeated Heartland of Owerri in the final.

Last year Egyptian international, Mohammed Aboutrika, who helped his club, Al Ahly of Egypt to win the CAF Champions League and country to win the 2008 Nations Cup in Ghana bagged the prestigious award.

BBC Fast Track presenter, Farayi Mungazi said: “This award is all about performance over the last twelve months, so only two of last year’s contenders have made it onto the list, with no place for Adebayor or Aboutrika.

Eto’o and Drogba are also among the ten shortlisted for the European Footballer of the Year Award.

The prestigious award is the only one of its kind to be decided ultimately by the fans.

And fools in the glass house are not doing anything to lift the game back home, saying Amodu is their mesiah. Let us wait and see. How can Nigerian player be nominated when Amodu will not discover more than Seyi Olofinjana and Yakubu Aiyegbeni?

Trésor Mputu Mabi




L'ascension du TP Mazembé, de nouveau le club champion d'Afrique après 41 ans, peut être directement liée à l'impact d'un seul homme: Trésor Mputu Mabi.

On peut également mettre au compte de ce seul homme la victoire de la RDC au match d'ouverture du Championnat d'Afrique des nations 2009 en Côte d'Ivoire, ou Trésor Mputu a été sacré meilleur joueur du tournoi.

L'homme a été la révélation football de 2007 après avoir terminé meilleur buteur de la Ligue des champions de la CAF.

Cette année-là, le TP Mazembé n'a pas réussi à atteindre la phase de poule de la Ligue, mais l'année suivante, c'est-à-dire en 2008, il arrivera presque en demi finale.

En 2009, Mputu désormais joueur plus mature avec ses 23 ans, prend le brassard de son club, et le conduit à la consécration, lui redonnant le trophée du championnat d'Afrique après un passage à vide de 41 ans.

Sur le terrain de jeu, le jeune joueur occupe une position d'arrière central, juste dernière le mur d'attaquants. Son aptitude à tromper les défenseurs de l'équipe adverse, par son talent et sa ruse, en fait un casse-tête pour l'adversaire.

Son style est exceptionnel: Il joue toujours collectif et semble, en retour, être à la réception de toutes les balles en direction du camp adverse, ce qui signifie qu'on le retrouve souvent parmi les attaquants.

Pour certains, c'est incompréhensible qu'un joueur aussi talentueux évolue toujours sur le continent, alors qu'il a tout ce qu'il faut pour une carrière en Europe.

Mais le TP Mazembé a fait de lui le joueur le mieux payé en Afrique, une récompense pour sa loyauté vis-à-vis du club et il a ainsi résisté jusque-là aux offres alléchantes qui lui sont faites pour un transfert à l'étranger.

Toutefois, il est libre de tout engagement moral après avoir réalisé sa promesse de rester avec le Mazembé jusqu'à ce que le club remporte la Coupe de la Ligue des champions de la CAF.

Moi, je pense que tous ceux qui ont voté plus de 2fois doivent aller à la BBC pour leur dire qu ils ont voté plus de 2 fois.
