TP Mazembe make history, become first African club to beat Monomotapa at home
By Sports Reporter
DEMOCRATIC Republic of Congo champions TP Mazembe made history on Saturday after becoming the first club in Africa to beat Zimbabwe champions Monomotapa at home in an African Champions league match at Rufaro Stadium on Saturday.
The Zimbabwe champions, playing in their maiden African Champions League tournament, went into the match on Saturday with a proud record of not having lost to any African side at home but that intimidating home record was broken when they were handed a 2-0 defeat by the DRC champions.
Monomotapa stunned watchers of the African game when the sent fancied Asec Mimosas of Ivory Coast tumbling out of the tournament after dismissing them 2-0 at their fortress-Rufaro Stadium in the first round of Africa’s premier club competition early this year.
The Zimbabwe champions had lost the first leg in Abidjan 1-0.
The Harare club had also lost 2-1 away to Miembemi of Zanzibar but when they returned to Rufaro, they booted out the Zanzibar champions out of the tournament following a 2-0 victory.
South Africa’s CAPE Town Ajax also came to Harare confident of beating the Zimbabwe champions after they had edged them 3-2 in Cape Town, but they crashed out of the prestigious competition after they were handed a 2-1 defeat at Rufaro.
Then came former African champions Eitole du Sahel of Tunisia. With an illustrious history in the African Champions League, the Tunisian giants were beaten 2-1 at Rufaro for Monomotapa to set an intimidating home record.
But, their proud record was shattered by TP Mazembe following goals on either side of the half by Kaluyitika Dioko who scored in the 9th minute and Given Singuluma who found the target at the stroke of full time.
Monomotapa, whose camp had been in turmoil following an industrial action which led to the suspension of key players alleged to be ring leaders before the PSL and a local tobacco company bailed the financially troubled club, were no match for the visitors who took control of the game resulting in them scoring two goals without reply.
Monomotapa captain Mtulisi Maphosa said it was disappointing to lose at home for the first time in the current campaign.
“It feels bad to lose at home for the first time but we are still in with a chance. There is still two games to come and we will focus on the upcoming games and see how it goes from there. We lost to a good side,”
Assistant coach Taurai Mangwiro said there was still everything to play for. “It’s disappointing that we lost but there is still everything to play for. We will see how the team performs in the upcoming matches but I think we let in soft goals,” he lamented after the match.
