Mazembe aim for Club World Cup

Mazembe coach Diego Garzitto is plotting success at the Club World Cup
DR Congo side TP Mazembe believe that they can become Africa's most successful club in the history of the Club World Cup.

The African Champions League winners face Pohamba Steelers of South Korea in their first match on 11 December at the tournament in the United Arab Emirates.

Should they progress, Argentina's Club Estudiantes de La Plata will be their semi-final opponents, with Spanish side Barcelona likely to reach the final from the other half of the draw.

Despite the daunting level of opposition, Mazembe's French coach Diego Garzitto insists that his side can make an impact.

"We hope that we can do better than Al Ahly, who have finished third at the competition," Garzitto told the BBC's African Sports programme Fast Track.

"So we are preparing to meet Barcelona - we want to take second place or, if it's possible, to win the cup."

"Anything can happen in football. We are a big team and we know that we can succeed."

Egyptian side Al Ahly took third position in 2006 and Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia were fourth in the 2007 edition of the competition that features the seven continental champions.

Mazembe, who prepared in Zimbabwe ahead of the Club World Cup, are counting on the inspiration of captain Tresor Mputu Mabi, one of the finalists for the BBC African Footballer of the Year award.

"Mputu is the best striker in Africa right now," club spokesman Eddy Kabhelu told BBC Sport.

"We also have Kaluyituka Dioko, who was top scorer in the African Champions League, and the ambition of the players is to put on a good show at the competition."

Mazembe are rebuilding their squad for next year, as they look to defend their Champions League title.

They have signed three players from Zimbabwean club Monomotapa - Mthulisi Maphosa, Chris Semakweri and Daniel Zokoto.

They have also acquired Zambia defender Hichani Himoonde, though none of the new players is registered for the Club World Cup.

The club is likely to lose Mputu and several other key players who seem destined for clubs in Europe.

"We already have a replacement for Mputu," said Kabelu.

"It won't be difficult, next year will be another good one for TP Mazembe."

Le Tout Puissant Mazembe est arrivé, dimanche, à Abou Dabi. Dans la capitale politique des Emirats arabes unis, le club du Katanga prendra part à la 6ème édition de la coupe du monde des clubs champions, rapporte radiookapi.net

Après avoir passé près de deux semaines de préparation au Zimbabwe, Mazembe défendra les couleurs de la République démocratique du Congo (RDC) et celles du continent africain. Il jouera, cette fois, sans son attaquant zambien Given Singuluma (suspendu pour indiscipline) et le camerounais Léopold Banyak, qui se trouve encore aux soins médicaux en Afrique du Sud, après un accident de circulation au lendemain du sacre de Mazembe en ligue des champions de la Caf.

Quelques heures seulement après avoir foulé le sol des Emirats, le club lushois a programmé pour dimanche, sa première séance à 19h00, heure locale, 16h00 à Kinshasa. Mazembe livre son premier match le vendredi 11 décembre contre les Sud coréens de Pohang Steelers.

CHIPOLOPOLO striker Given Singuluma has said he will join TP Mazembe today after media reports that he had failed to join the team's training camp in Zimbabwe.

According to a BBC sport radio report yesterday, Singuluma is a doubt for TP Mazembe’s outing to this years FIFA Club World Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after failing to join the 2009 Orange Champions League winners camp in Zimbabwe.

However, Singuluma in an interview yesterday said he had just been delayed to join the club and was expected to join the team today.

"I am delayed. I will join (the team) tomorrow (today). I will go tomorrow," Singuluma said.
Singuluma said he had been in touch with the club despite his absence at TP's Zimbabwe camp.

Meanwhile, TP officials told the BBC that Singuluma had failed to join camp in Zimbabwe for unknown reasons.

TP coach Diego Garzitto said Singuluma was now not in his plans for the FIFA Club World Cup that will be held in the UAE from December 9 -19.

Ceci ne fait que diminuer le niveau du club ! Singuluma même s'il n'était pas à la hauteur pendant la C1 est quand même un de nos bons pions (il peut ressusciter à n'importe quel moment). Sinon quant au cas Bagnack, son absence, on va la payer !

Moi de toutes les facons Mbagnac ne m'a jamais convaincu, on a tjrs eu un vide dans l'axe depuis un moment, la preuve, on fait descendre Kazembe, rien de bon dans cet axe, avec ou sans Mbagnac c'est meme chose...
