Youssouf Mulumbu ideal for us, says West Brom boss Di Matteo
Sep 26 2009 by Christopher Lepkowski, Birmingham Mail
Add a commentRecommend YOUSSOUF Mulumbu has been the ideal man for Albion, so claims Roberto Di Matteo.
The Congo international joined this summer from Paris Saint Germain when Albion took up the option to formalise his loan spell into a permanent deal.
It was a tough job convincing Mulumbu to join during the summer, not least as his agents were posturing for a top flight move with the situation not helped by Tony Mowbray’s departure.
But Mulumbu finally signed. It is proving to the shrewdest £175,000 the club have spent for many years.
His energy, desire and ‘destroyer’ qualities in front of the back four have been crucial. He has also proven that he isn’t shy at the other end of the pitch.
Roberto Di Matteo has certainly been impressed, claiming that the midfielder is exactly the kind of player Albion needed to shore up what was the Premier League’s most generous defence.
“I think he is a very good young player,” said the Italian.
“He has stabilised the defensive side with the rest of the team.
“We identified at the start of the season that we needed a holding midfield player and I think he is growing into that role.
“He still has to improve on certain aspects of the game.
“He’s scored two goals so far and that’s a bonus.
“But he’s certainly started well. We’re pleased with him.”
