Re: Monomotapa (Zimbabwe) vs TP Mazembe (RD Congo) Retour
Zimbabwe's Monomotapa Humbled At Home
Harare, August 29, 2009 - Monomotapa's chances of reaching the semi finals of the Caf Champions League received a big blow on Saturday after the Zimbabwean champions were humbled 2-0 at home at Rufaro Stadium by TP Mazembe of the DRC.
Goals by Dioko Kaluyatula were enough to secure victory for the Congolese and shoot to the top of the four team group while at the same time condemning Monos to the bottom of the table.
For Kaluyatula, the goals now make him the leading goal scorer in the eight team, two group phase with seven goals to his credit.
TP Mazembe now lead the group with nine points while Hearland were second on six and both Etoile du Sahel and Monomotapa on three. Du Sahel and Heartland were scheduled to clash in another game later in the evening.
The Zimbabweans champions now need a miracle to stay in contention for a place in the semis in their two remaining games, one of which is away from home to Etoile du Sahel, the other being a home tie against Hearland of Nigeria.
The defeat also left Monomotapa as the only team in the four club contest to have lost a home game in the six game programme.
The Congolese also completed a double over Monomotapa having thrashed the Zimbabweans 5-0 in the reverse fixture in Kinshasa two weeks ago.
Needing a victory or at least a point, Monoz were no match for the more experienced and fluid Congolese struggling heavily.
They were slow on the ball, could not string one or two passes together while their opponents knocked the ball around much to the delight of their large band of supporters they brought to Harare.
In fact, there were rich pickings for the Mazembe players. While last week Monomotapa were on strike for an outstanding $400 bonus each, the Congolese had been promised $5000 each for a win and they dult earned their reward.
While Mezambe are celebrating all the way back to Kinshasa, for Monomotapa, it is back to the drawing board as they attempt to produce what looks like the improbable in their remaining two game

Re: Monomotapa (Zimbabwe) vs TP Mazembe (RD Congo) Retour
"The Sunday Mail" zimbabwéen reconnait que Maz était trop fort pour Mwene Mutapa...
Mazembe too powerful for Monoz
By Makomborero Mutimukulu
Monomotapa .....................................… (0) 0 TP Mazembe ....................................…. (1) 2
MONOMOTAPA’S chances of progressing to the CAF Champions League semi-finals were left hanging by the thinnest of threads after the Zimbabwean soccer champions fell to a vastly superior TP Mazembe at Rufaro yesterday.
The defeat, Monoz’s first defeat at home and third of the group stage, left Rodwell Dhlakama’s outfit needing something close to a miracle to progress to the last four of Africa’s premier club competition as they have a mere three points from four matches.
Monomotapa now need to convincingly win their two remaining matches against Heartland of Nigeria at home and Etoile du Sahel away in Tunisia.
In contrast, TP Mazembe, with 9 points from a possible 12, put one foot into the semi-finals of a competition they are one of the favourites to win for the third time after their triumphs in 1967 and 1968.
It was always going to be difficult for Monomotapa after their 5-0 drubbing away to the Democratic Republic of Congo a fortnight ago but a hitherto 100 percent home record gave the locals hope.
But the game that Monomotapa had to win to breathe life into their CAF Champions League campaign turned into a nightmare as TP Mazembe raced into an eighth-minute lead. Kaluyituka Dioko took advantage of some horrible defending by the Monoz rearguard to beat Godfrey Mangove, who had done well to save his header, at the second time of asking.
Defenders Luckmore Simango and Witness Nyamutsaka appeared awed by Mangove’s wonder save as they allowed Dioko, scorer of a hat-trick in Lubumbashi, to send the travelling Mazembe supporters into delirium.
It could have gotten worse for Monoz four minutes later, but Dioko’s pile driver, that had zoomed past a motionless Mangove, crashed against the crossbar.
It was a sorry sight for the appreciative crowd that came to rally behind Monomotapa as the visitors, led by captain Tresor Mputu, dictated the pace of the game.
The Zimbabwean champions’ first sniff at goal came on 22 minutes but it was a tame effort, Chris Samakweri shooting straight into the hands of TP Mazembe goalkeeper Kadiaba Muteba.
Mthulusi Maphosa then stung Muteba with a 40-metre drive, the Congolese international goalkeeper doing well to punch the ball away for a corner.
A disappointing Tendai Samanja then blazed over in front of an open goal after being set up by a neat exchange of passes between Asani Nhongo and Samakweri on 43 minutes.
It turned out to be Monoz’s best chance of the match.
Dioko could have doubled TP Mazembe’s lead four minutes after the breather but the giant striker headed over with Mangove stranded.
In a bid to bring life into his team Dhlakama hauled out the ineffective pair of Samanja and Daniel Zokoto for Tawanda Nyamandwe and Charles Chiutsa on 54 minutes. Nyamandwe and Chiutsa did add some oomph but Monomotapa always looked lightweight in attack with strikers Darrly Nyandoro and Daniel Kamunenga anonymous. With the game meandering towards the end TP Mazembe coach Diego Garzitto began to close shop, inviting Monomotapa to pour forward in search of an equaliser.
And in one such raid, in the 93rd minute, Dhlakama’s men where caught with swift counter attacking move that culminated with substitute Given Singuluma depositing the ball past a bemused Mangove.
With his team’s Champions League campaign clinically dead, Dhlakama was gutted after the match.
“We could have won this match but we made some silly mistakes at the back. There was also a hint of my boys being too cautious after the 5-0 defeat in the DRC two weeks ago,” said the Monoz gaffer.
Teams
Monomotapa: G. Mangove T. Samanja (C. Chiutsa 54th minute), F. Mangezie, D. Kamunenga (T. Gwata 79th minute) , M. Maphosa, A. Nhongo, L. Simango, C. Samakwere, D. Zokoto (T. Nyamandwe 54th minute), W. Nyamutsaka, D. Nyandoro.

Bravo Garzito...
